What to bring:

Grubby clothes and shoes – you may/will spill ink.
Bring a lunch, or you can go out, we will take a break midday.
Drawings or images on paper, computer, or memory stick. You’ll need to have this ready for Saturday but bring some things Friday.

Friday

Friday will include instruction on the 8 Steps of Screenprinting. All hands on, you will learn about art and films, coating and exposing with photo emulsion, inks and stock, make ready and printing, and then reclaiming the screen - the full cycle.

Saturday

Saturday we will work with you to complete a short print run on either paper, shirts, or both, with your own design (best to have an idea of what you’d like to do). You will need to bring your own shirts or fabric to print. Saturday production runs should not be longer than 10-20 pieces. Paper and all materials - inks, emulsion, etc are free to use. If you are printing wood, glass, leather or other materials, please bring.

Are you new to printing, looking for a refresher, or interested in learning new screen printing methods?

In this two-day workshop, you will gain hands-on experience as you are introduced to the basic fundamentals of screen printing. This includes how to:

• Make art for screenprinting
• Coat and expose screens with art
• Set up a multicolour job
• Print onto paper and textiles using water-based inks

This course is all about hands-on learning and creating.

The Idaho Art Lab makerspace is home to a wide range of manual and automatic equipment that you can rent by-the-hour. This workshop provides a great opportunity to learn on different presses. With up-to-date techniques, this course aims to make you more efficient and give you better printing results.

No experience necessary!

What to expect:

Friday:

• Studio tour
• Introduction to the 8 Basic Steps of Screen Printing
• Stencil-making: materials, tools, and film
• Screens: coating, exposing, and reclaiming
• Pull your first print; see the relationships between the various elements of the screen printing process and how they all work together.

Saturday:

• Students create and print their own simple designs
• We make an attempt to accommodate small runs of art prints, textiles, or other materials.

Having trouble printing at your own home or studio? Feel free to bring samples and we can dissect problems and offer solutions to a range of issues.

We are committed to helping you continue to print after you have finished the course; upon completion, you are certified to continue using the Screen Printing Lab for $3 - $5/hour. You will also learn how to make simple presses, exposing frames, and washout booths to use at home or in your own studio in case you are not local.
